| The Big Stank About Google PageRank |
by Rick Katz (c)2003
When Google talks, people listen.
When Google introduced their proprietary ranking formula,
known as PageRank (or PR for short), webmasters and SEO
people worldwide paid attention.
Well, there's good reason to pay attention, my fellow web
marketer. You just aren't going to get top rankings (on the
Google network of search engines anyway) without high PageRank.
Oh, you might get a top listing for a keyphrase like "green
chrome-plated Wisconsin fishing hooks" without high PR, sure.
However, if you want a top ranking for a keyphrase like "men's
shirts" or "ladies shoes", uh uh. Not going to happen without
the old PR.
More and more, webmasters are starting to realize that optimizing
their websites is not rocket science. It takes time and it does
take work, but it's not impossible. In fact, it's pretty simple.
This brief article doesn't allow me the time to get into too
deeply. However, there is plenty of good info out there on the
web on what to do.
PageRank seems to be the last big mystery, but, in fact, it's
really pretty simple. You just need a strategic plan to get your
website linked to from other websites. You preferably want those
sites to already have high PageRank.
PageRank is like water. Hyperlinks are the pipes..the plumbing
that PageRank flows through.
So, if you can get a site that has a lot of PageRank to link to
you, their PageRank will flow from their site to yours, thereby
increasing your PageRank.
That was a long sentence, I know. However, that's what happens!
So, if you have a website you're trying to get listed high on
Google (and the other major search engines), start optimizing
your site and don't forget to hook up your PageRank plumbing!
