A twenty year study of Yale graduates found that 3% of
the graduates made more money than remaining 97%
COMBINED. A later study of Harvard graduates over 10
years found that 3% earned 10 times more than the other
97% COMBINED. What was the one factor that was different
between the 3% and the 97% in both studies? The 3% had
WRITTEN goals and a plan of action they followed daily. Think
about that for a minute. The difference between success and
financial independence was the act of writing down goals.
My question to you is: If all it takes is writing down your goals
and a plan for reaching them to improve your odds of success
plus earn 10 times more than the majority of the population,
why not take the time to do it? Writing your goals and a plan
would take an hour or so and reviewing it daily would take a few
minutes. Isn't that a small price to pay to significantly increase
your chances of reaching your goal?
Why does it work? Most "experts" suspect that the act of writing
down goals and plans triggers a mechanism in the brain (called
reticular activating system) that creates awareness of
opportunities (sometimes called luck) that bring people closer to
their goal. A great book by Henriette Klauser called Write It
Down, Make It Happen, recounts experiences in which people
have written a goal, lost the paper it was on, only to find it years
later and discover the goal was met anyway. The brain is a
powerful thing and when focused, can achieve tremendous feats.
Another important factor in writing goals is that doing so will
also help create direction, a map so to speak that helps you use
your time more effectively. Too many people (97%) wander
aimlessly through life letting life happen to them. The 3% who
choose to take action reach their destination sooner and with
greater success because they choose to dictate the direction of
their life. Sure life happens to them but it never steers them too
far off course.
Here are some quick tips about goals:
1) Write them down!
2) Be specific. How much? When? Doing what? Describe it in
detail.
3) Have them challenging but reasonable.
4) Set a date for achieving your goal. Not someday but an exact
date.
5) Create a plan for reaching your goal. What do you need to do
each day, each week, each month to get from here to there?
Review /your plan often.
6) Take action!
